Visiting Vaishno Devi is a spiritually enriching experience, and the journey to the temple is an adventure in itself. Here’s a general guide on how to visit Vaishno Devi: 1. Start Your Journey from Katra: Katra is the base town where your journey to Vaishno Devi begins. You can reach Katra by road or by train (Katra Railway Station). From Katra, the main route to the temple is a 13 km trek up the mountain. 2. Trekking to Vaishno Devi Temple: The trek is well-maintained and usually takes around 6-8 hours, depending on your pace. You can either walk, take a pony ride, or use a helicopter service for a quicker journey (although the helicopter service covers only a part of the trek). Along the way, you’ll find multiple rest stops, food stalls, and places to offer prayers. 3. Vaishno Devi Temple: Upon reaching the temple, you’ll find yourself inside a sacred cave, where the deity of Vaishno Devi is enshrined in the form of a Pind (holy symbols). You’ll perform prayers and take the blessings of the goddess. Devotees usually make a small offering and complete a ritual called "Aarti" (a prayer with music) at the temple. 4. Return Journey: After visiting the temple, you can begin the trek back to Katra or opt for a pony ride or helicopter again if you want a quicker return. Some pilgrims also choose to visit other spots around the area like Bhairon Temple (which is located at a higher point and is considered an essential part of the pilgrimage). 5. Important Tips for the Trip: Clothing: Wear comfortable shoes and carry light, warm clothing, as it can get chilly in the higher regions. Health Precautions: Be prepared for the physical exertion of the trek. Keep water and some light snacks with you, and if you’re not used to trekking, it’s advisable to take breaks. Darshan: Be prepared for a crowd, especially during peak seasons (like during festivals), so you may have to wait in line. Safety: The path is well-marked, and there are plenty of security and medical facilities, but always stay alert and take care of your belongings.
