Mornings at Dal Lake are poetry in motion   Be that tourist who takes a Shikara ride on the Dal Lake. At sunset. Glide across the mirror like dal lake is a gorgeous little shikara. Lay back and take it the views of the mountains around you on one side, and the houseboats on the other. Marvel at the stunning reflection of the world in the water. And watch the water gobble up the sun while it colours the world in brilliant shades of orange. Also, be the traveler who wakes up at 5 to catch the sunrise at Dal Lake. Perks of waking up that early - you're the first shikara on the lake, you have it ALL to yourself. Visit the vegetable market, where the local vendors are selling their wares on shikara. Eat the kebabs near Dal Lake They are DELICIOUS. Take your pick from lamb, chicken or fish (or all, like, who's even stopping you), and watch how they sizzle and pop on the barbecue right in front of you. Dig in with a roomily roti and those AMAZING chutneys. Yum.

Activity   Day 2 Srinagar to Gulmarg

You'll depart from Srinagar early morning to get to Gulmarg by midday. Use this day to settle in and head up to Phase 2. Take a skiing lesson on Day 2. You won't regret it ???? Gondola to Phase 1, and then Phase 2 No one goes to Phase 2. Seriously. It's right up there, at 14000 ft, and the views will take your breath away (literally, in some cases, so pop a Diamox if you are prone to altitude sickness). You can hop across the rope barricade and crunch your way through the snow to a point where you can see Lahore and PoK. The only people you will see are the ones you're with. The only sounds you'll hear are those of the wind whistling through your hair. Imagine standing on a rock and gazing out at miles and miles of white, against the blue sky shot with clouds that move at a crazy pace. I did that. I didn't want to leave. When in Kashmir, be sure to try the lamb delicacies and biryanis. Also, local desserts - moong dal halwa and phirni. So delish! No better way to get back down from Phase 1 than to plonk yourself in a sled and get whipped around the slopes till you're back down (it's safe)! Wake up nice and early and hit the skiing zone for learners.you'll get to learn the basics of skiing - posture, balance, moving ahead, speeding up, slowing down, stopping.. It's a TON of fun! If you find it's your thing, go for the whole 7-day course that involves skiing down from the slopes of Phase 1, or even 2! *adrenalin rush WOOHOO!* Walk through the markets Familiarise yourself with the local wares, chat with the locals, and get some fun pictures as you walk back to your hotel through the market area.

    Activity   Gulmarg-Doodhpathri-Srinagar

The name Doodhpathri means Valley of Milk in Kashmiri. Folklore suggests that Kashmir’s revered saint and preacher, Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani (Nund Rishi) once struck his stick on the ground while looking for water to pray, and milk flowed out instead. This milk later turned into water that began flowing across the meadows, giving the area its name. The water in Doodhpathri still has a milky white appearance when viewed from a distance.  The more plausible explanation is that the region has always remained rich in milk production. The landscape of Doodhpathri consists of vast grassy slopes dotted with colourful wildflowers. It falls in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas and is surrounded by snow-clad mountains. The meadows are covered with pine and deodar forests. During winters, the entire area is blanketed under snow. In spring and summer, wildflowers like daisies and buttercups bloom across the meadows.

Activity   Day 4 Sonamarg - day trip from Srinagar

Head back to Srinagar from Gulmarg and stay the night. Leave early the next morning - around 8 - for Sonamarg. Here's where you will find the BEST snowscapes ever. Thajiwas Glacier Thajiwas Glacier is by far the biggest tourist attraction of Sonamarg. Contrary to common belief, you do not go all the way to the glacier. Rather, you actually trek about 3 kilometers from Sonamarg to a place called Snow Point. From there, you get a clear view of the glacier and can also indulge in activities like sledding. The trek is not difficult at all and is a walk of about 90 minutes to 2 hours from Sonamarg to Snow Point. You can either walk on your own or can even rent a pony for the same. The standard rate of pony is between Rs. 700 to Rs. 1500 in the tourist season and between Rs. 500 to Rs. 800 in the off-season. How much you will pay will entirely depend on how well you were able to negotiate. Zojila Pass Next in line would be the well-known Zoji La Pass. It is at an altitude of 11,575 ft and located at a distance of 25 kilometers from Sonamarg. Why would you want to go to the pass? There are two reasons for this. One is that the views from the top are simply amazing. The second reason is that the drive itself is quite adventurous and will have your heart jumping to your throat at several places. Cabs can also be rented in Sonamarg to visit Zojila. To read more, please take a look at How to Plan your Trip from Sonamarg to Zoji La Pass. Also Read: Zojila Pass – Status, Timings & Road Conditions Zero Point Zero-point is actually a spot about 2 kilometers from Zoji la Top. From Sonamarg, you drive to the top of the pass and then drive another 2 kilometers towards Dras to reach a spot where there are a lot of Dhabas. I am not sure why they named it Zero Point but you can get something to eat and drink there, click some photos, and get a view of the other side of the pass before starting to drive back to Sonamarg. How to reach Zero Point Sonmarg? Taxis are available in Sonamarg itself for a day trip to Zojila Pass and Zero Point. These taxis usually charge about 4-5k for a day trip. Speak to your hotel owner and they may be able to arrange a cab for you at a lower price. You can also take a look at the video below for the Zojila Pass drive and snow point. Sarbal Sarbal is a small village about 2 kilometers from Sonamarg market. It is a small charming village located in the forest and you should visit here just for the views and experience the local life in the villages of Kashmir. Table Top This place is about 2-3 hours of a trek away from Sonamarg. The trek is actually a little difficult and steep because you literally climb up the face of a mountain. It is called Table Top because it is a flat piece of land on the slope of the hill. From there, you get an amazing view of Sonamarg, Thajiwas Glacier, Sind River, and the entire valley, especially at Sunset. That pretty much is it. Sonamarg is really a small town and there are not many other places to visit here. You can also drive to the other side of the river and get a superb view, like in the first picture of this article. There are several other lakes around Sonamrg like Tarsar Marsar, Vishansar, and Kishansar but they are all located deep inside the forests and will require you to trek for a few days. Things to Do in Sonamarg You can follow the link above to read about this as well in detail but for a brief overview, mentioned below are the tourist activities you can enjoy in Sonamarg. Trekking This one goes without saying. Sonamarg is really a haven for people interested in trekking. There are short treks like Thajiwas and Table Top as well as several others that will need you to walk in the forests for several days. Pony Ride Hire a pony and ride it to the Thajiwas Glacier. It is definitely a lot of fun. Sledding What is sledding? The activity is basically you sitting on a wooden sled and riding it down on the snow. It remains available for all 12 months, even in summer. There are several places near Thajiwas Glacier where snow remains for all 12 months in small patches and serves as sledding spots. Skiing This of course happens only in the winter season for a few weeks as soon as Sonamarg opens. There is plenty of snow left by the end of March and early April and you can enjoy skiing in the valley near Thajiwas Glacier trek.

    Info   Day 5 Pahalgam

Pahalgam is 3-4 hours by road from Srinagar. Pahalgam is a land of valleys Aru Valley and Betaab Valley are by far the most famous ones, and if a day is all you got, hit 'em. Some of the best views of the valleys and the mountains can only be seen from beautiful points across the mountains, and you need a pony to get you there, because the roads aren't motorable, nor are they too convenient to quickly hike up and down from. Bollywood fans - this is where Bajrangi Bhaijaan was shot. It's a GORGEOUS, sprawling meadow, with trees fanning out, and the mountains towering over at you. Think ideal picnic spot. You can totally bring a picnic basket and a blanket, along with some board games and spend the entire day relaxing here! This flows through Pahalgam the visual of the river gurgling over rocks in the valley is stunning.

Info   Day 6 Pahalgam - Srinagar

Betaab Valley Without any doubt, Betaab Valley is possibly the most popular tourist attraction in Pahalgam. It is uphill at a distance of about 7 kilometers from the main town. So, what is Betaab Valley? Before 1983, it was just a meadow that the local shepherds used to graze their livestock in. At that time, it was called Hagan Valley or Hagoon. Then in 1983, Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh starrer movie Betaab was shot here. Both the movie and the valley were instant hits. Due to the popularity of the movie, the meadow itself was renamed Betaab Valley.   It has now been converted into a park-like area and is a favorite among the locals as well. You will find a lot of Kashmiri families here out for a picnic. The entire setting of the place is very scenic with the Lidder River flowing right next to it. To read more about Betaab Valley, take a look at Road Trip from Pahalgam to Betaab Valley. Chandanwari The next on the list is Chandanwari, located at a distance of about 8 kilometers from Betaab Valley and 15 kilometers from Pahalgam. This is the place where the motorable road ends and the trek for Amarnath Cave begins. There is nothing special about Chandanwari, to be honest. It is located in the middle of the forest and is marked by a lot of small dhabas.   It is only the setting of the place and the natural beauty around it that makes it worth a visit. Even the drive from Pahalgam to Chananwari is quite scenic. If you want to explore a little more, you can hire a pony and venture into the forest. There is a waterfall as well somewhere nearby (as per the pony owners) but I cannot comment on how it was because I did not go Aru Valley This in my opinion is the most scenic place near Pahalgam. The small village of Aru is located about 12 kilometers from Pahalgam. It is the starting point of several treks and is always bustling with trekkers either starting or returning from their excursion. There is also a meadow at one end of the village which is perfect for spending some time and having fun.   Even the drive from Pahalgam to Aru is quite scenic with several viewpoints in between. Aru Village, as I also mentioned previously, also has a lot of cost-effective hotels which makes it a great place to stay for budget travelers. Baisaran Valley It is a valley or a meadow located about 6 kilometers from Pahalgam. The place can only be accessed either on foot or on a pony. The trek takes you through a dense forest before ending in a village called Baisaran up in the mountains. The same trek then goes further up to other villages like Kani Marg and Tulian Valley (also Tulian Lake). The difficulty level of the trek is Beginner to Intermediate and is great for anyone who isn’t into trekking but would like to add the experience to their travel plans. Hiring a pony is the best and most preferred way to explore Baisaran. The entire trek can be easily completed in a few hours and the pony owners usually charge around Rs. 1500 per person for a day. Aishmuqam Remember the song Bhar do Jholi Meri from the movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan? It was shot near Pahalgam at a place called Aishmuqaam. It is the shrine of a Sufi saint Baba Zaina-ud-din Wali, also known as Zaino Shah Sahib. Aishmuqaam is located about 19 kilometers before Pahalgam and 34 kilometers from Anantnag. You can visit it while going to Pahalgam or coming back. The shrine is located on a hillock and is visible from the road itself. Pahalgam Golf Course There is also a golf course in Pahalgam which is a popular destination for tourists. Several golf tournaments are held here and even as a beginner, you can try your hand at the sport for a few hundred bucks an hour. Even if you are not interested in golf, it is still a great place to visit and explore. Lidder River Last but not least is the Lidder River.  It is a glacial river that originates from the Kolahoi glacier, flows through the valleys of Pahalgam, and will be your companion for the most part of your trip here. Its crystal-clear water is home to many different kinds of fish and is also a lifeline for the locals as it gets used for irrigation purposes as well.   Many tourist activities like white water rafting, angling, horse riding, and fishing are done in the Lidder River. I do not want to add all this information here again because that will just render this one post too long. Things to Do in Pahalgam Below is a list of things to do in Pahalgam apart from visiting all of the above-mentioned places.
