* About Bandhavgarh National Park

Located 170 kms from Jabalpur, spread over more than 700 sq kms of undulating forests, steep ravines and meadows, Bandhavgarh is rich in wildlife history and the royal bengal tiger. The reserve gets its name from a prominent hill which was said to be gifted by Lord Rama to his brother Laxman to keep a watch on Lanka (Bandhav + Garh). The park was given by the Maharaja of Rewa to create the national park. There have been white tigers in the park previously, the last known called Mohan, and its believed that all white tigers globally trace their roots to Bandhavgarh. Major mammals found in the jungle include tiger, leopard, wild dog, hyena, wolf, jungle cat, jackal, chital, sambar and black buck. Recently, a herd of wild elephants has been often spotted near the Tala and Magadhi zones. The idol of Sheshshaiya (Sleeping Vishnu) rests atop Kila Bandhogarh in the Tala zone.
