The earliest reference to Mahabalipuram is found in the 7th century AD Tamil text "Manimekalai". The town is also mentioned in the 8th century AD Tamil text "Periplus of the Erythraean Sea". According to the Periplus, Mahabalipuram was a major port town and a centre of maritime trade. The rock-cut temples of Mahabalipuram were built during the Pallava dynasty.
 
Due to its architectural brilliance, Mahabalipuram was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Some of the highlights of Mahabalipuram include the Shore Temple, Arjuna's Penance, the Five Rathas, and the Pancha Pandava Mandapam. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has been extensively carved with beautiful sculptures. 
 
The Five Rathas are a set of five monolithic temples that were carved out of a single rock. The temples are dedicated to the five Pandava brothers from the Mahabharata epic. The Pancha Pandava Mandapam is a large hall that was once used for religious ceremonies. It is carved with scenes from the Mahabharata epic.
