The rich culture of Odisha is dated back from the 3rd century BC. According to legend, the region was first settled by the sons of the sage Viswamitra. The region was then ruled by the Mahameghavahana dynasty and the Somavamsi dynasty. In the 12th century, the region was conquered by the Ganga dynasty. The region was then ruled by the Maratha dynasty, the British East India Company, and the British Raj. After India's independence in 1947, the region was divided into Odisha State and the present-day Chhattisgarh State.
