Mumbai Central Railway Station, also known as Mumbai Terminus, is a major railway station on the Western line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway network. It serves as the terminus for long-distance trains from Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and other parts of India. The station is also connected to the Central Railway network, making it a major railway junction in India. Even the Mumbai local trains are also connected from this station.
Mumbai Central is the busiest railway station in India, serving as a
major transit point for both long-distance and suburban trains. In 2013-14, the station handled more than 230 million passengers. The station has six platforms, each of which can handle 12 coaches. The station has a total of 16 tracks, of which 10 are used for long-distance and suburban trains, and the remaining 6 are used for goods trains.
The station is located in Mumbai's congested and commercial area, close to the Girgaon neighbourhood. It is well connected to the rest of the city by buses and taxis. The station has a number of amenities, including a food plaza, a book stall, a tourist information centre, and a cloakroom.
The Mumbai Central Railway Station was originally built in 1887 and popularly known as Victoria Terminus. It was renamed Mumbai Central in 1954. The station underwent a major renovation in 2002, in order to accommodate the increasing number of passengers.
