Gorakhpur is a city located in the north-eastern part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The city is known for its spicy food and is home to the Gorakhnath Math, a Hindu temple complex. Today, the city serves as a major educational and economic centre in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The city is also home to several universities, including the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University, and the Gorakhpur University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences.
The city is believed to have been founded by the king of the Saketa region, Gorakhpur, and named after Gorakhnath, a prominent 13th-century yogi and saint who is said to have founded the Nath tradition. The city was later seized by the Mughal emperor Akbar in the 16th century. In 1765, the city was captured by the British East India Company, and it became a part of the North-Western Provinces of British India. The district of Gorakhpur was carved out of the district of Basti in 1858. The district was initially divided into two tehsils, namely Gorakhpur and Maharajganj. In 1877, the tehsil of Gorakhpur was divided into two parganas, namely Gorakhpur and Khadda. In 1879, the pargana of Gorakhpur was divided into six tahsilas, namely Gorakhpur, Chillupar, Maharajganj, Pipraich, Rudrapur, and Belthara. In 1881, the tahsilas of Chillupar, Maharajganj, Pipraich, and Rudrapur were merged to form the new tahsil of Gorakhpur. In 1896, the tahsil of Belthara was merged with the tahsil of Gorakhpur.
