Chandigarh, with its perfect blend of modernity and tradition, is one of those places where you will immediately feel comfortable. It is a Union Territory of India that serves as the capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana. Located in the foothills of the Shivalik range, Chandigarh is one of India's most industrialised areas, with a number of major corporations having their headquarters there. The city is named after the Chandi Devi temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Chandi and located within the city.
In 1956, the city of Chandigarh was formed from the former princely state of Patiala and the East Punjab States Union (PEPSU). Le Corbusier, a French architect, designed the city. The Government of India commissioned him to design a new city to replace Pakistan's war-torn Lahore. Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, laid the foundation stone on February 12, 1950. Following India's partition in 1947, the former British province of Punjab was divided between India and Pakistan. Punjab was given to the Indian portion, while Punjab Province was given to the Pakistani portion. The Indian government decided to build a new city as the capital of the Punjab state and commissioned Le Corbusier to design it.
The city is also a popular tourist destination, known for its gardens, architecture, and cultural heritage, and one should explore every corner of it.
