It took a team of more than 12,000 workers six years to build the structure.  The building was designed by Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Smith, who was the chief architect of the project, was inspired by the Islamic architecture of the region.
 
The Burj Khalifa has a Y-shaped plan, with the wings facing Mecca.
