The entire world is working to resurrect tourism in the aftermath of the COVID–19 pandemic, and with global travel picking up again, India is once again welcoming foreign visitors. Foreign tourists are paying more attention to Tamil Nadu than to any other Indian state. Countries including Australia, Thailand, and Brazil have expressed interest in the state. Previously, the majority of international visitors to Tamil Nadu came from France, Spain, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Heritage and spiritual tourism are particularly popular in Tamil Nadu. Heritage and spiritual tourism are concentrated in places like Puducherry, Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Rameshwaram, and Madurai.
Wildlife tourism, as well as heritage and spiritual tourism, are being promoted by the state tourism department. Mudumalai National Park, Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Mukurthi National Park, Guindy National Park, Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, Karikili Bird Sanctuary, Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary, and Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve are among the nine national parks found in Tamil Nadu.
Except for a few, most of these parks have low visitor numbers. Bringing them into the spotlight might be a game-changer.
The next 44th Chess Olympiad, which is expected to attract visitors from over 150 countries, could also be a good opportunity to promote several tourism spots in Tamil Nadu. According to tourism department officials, special hotel bargains, international fairs, and promoting rural tourism are all smart ideas.
