India will soon be home to the world's longest highway tunnel beneath the 16,580 ft high Shinku-La Pass, between Zanskar Valley in Ladakh and Lahaul Valley in Himachal Pradesh. As per the reports, the tunnel will be ready by 2025 and will provide all-weather connectivity between Ladakh and Himachal.
After witnessing the opening of the Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road amid fresh snowfall and in the midst of 5 to 6 ft high snow walls, the Director-General of Border Roads (DGBR) stated that this new road will be officially opened for all types of vehicles after the highway's blacktopping and the Shinku-La tunnel are completed in three years.
The Shinku-La tunnel will be 4.25 kilometres long and the world's longest and highest tunnel at this altitude, according to BRO Chief Lt General Rajeev Chaudhury. He also mentioned that tunnel construction will begin this year in July or August.
According to reports, the construction of the Nimmu-Darcha road began 20 years ago and has been plagued by numerous technical difficulties. The new road, however, will be a relief not only to the residents but also to the Army once it is built.
There are no plans to introduce the Keylong-Sarchu-Leh highway under Yojak, according to Chief Lt General; nevertheless, another project will most likely be developed to maintain the route and construct the projected highway tunnels. The BRO DG arrived at Shinku-La for the first time after reviewing the under-construction Nimmu-Padum-Darcha roadway, which was opened to the public by a large number of Zanskar Valley people.
The Nimmu-Padum-Darcha highway will be far safer than the existing Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh highways because it does not pass near the India-China or India-Pakistan borders. The Atal tunnel offers an alternative to the 13000-ft high Rohtang Pass and is the world's longest highway tunnel above 10000 ft.
